The Northwest Fisheries Science Center a division of NOAA Fisheries reports that the expected Salmon returns for the Northwest region may be lower than normal. Researchers indicate that 2014 offered a low abundance of winter fish larvae that develop into salmon prey in the spring. Spring salmon fishing guides and sports anglers may disagree, but moderate catches of juvenile spring Chinook salmon during the June survey off Washington and Oregon are key indicators as well. Overall, juvenile salmon entering the ocean in 2014 encountered below average ocean conditions off Oregon and Washington likely leading to below average returns of adult Coho salmon in 2015 and Chinook salmon in 2016.
